Bonfire meet - Please bring food donations towards supper in barn on saturday night after bonfire. Always a great weekend.
Hi all
This week we have been to Glebe farm for our bonfire meet. We arrived on Thursday night in cold and windy conditions. I was working on Friday so it was up to Sandra helped by Mum & Dad to meet and greet our guests. 24 units in total this year which is a record for this meet. The weather was mostly dry but it was still cold and quite windy. No local pubs this week so we went to Sharron & Steve’s for a drink & a chat before going to bed.
Saturday morning and the weather was dry to start with. I had a quick trip in to Askern for some gas as we had run out the night before. After getting back on site we found that the shopping team had gone to Pontefract to get the food for the supper. I rounded up a team to go to the barn to set out the tables for the evening. Not an easy task to set places for 60 but we managed it just.
I went round the vans to collect the soup donations so that mum could make a start on her concoction. At 6.30 we all made our way to the top of the field to light the fire and watch the fireworks. As usual we had a good display and a nice big fire provided by Chris the farmer. Afterwards we all met up in the barn for the supper. Once again we had a feast. With Soup, Pie & Peas, Tea & Coffee and all that sweet sticky stuff you eat on bonfire night. Space was limited but we managed and I think that we all had a good night.
Sunday morning and the weather was dry after some overnight rain. We held the coffee morning in the barn at the usual time of 11.00 o’clock. After filling every body in with all my announcements and news it was time to pack up, and you have guessed it. Rain, Rain and more rain. At least it stayed fine for most of the weekend.
With all the donations that we received for Fireworks, Pie & Peas and the raffle etc. we made £45.00 profit after we had taken out what we had spent. This money was donated to the Farmers charity which is for Children’s cancer.
I would like to thank everybody that helped us this weekend. We could not do it on our own and we do appreciate your help.
Well that’s it from me for another season. What will I do now on Sunday night?
See you all soon.
Duncan
Hello again, back from our last meet of the season, our Bonfire meet at Barnsdale Bar hosted by Sandra & Duncan. We arrived on Friday about 12ish in quite high winds, but no rain, and after setting up we went for a cuppa with Sandra who was waiting for Duncan to arrive after work.We eventually went back to our van for a bit of lunch. I then went to the pile of wood for our bonfire where I knew there was a nice big cherry tree and I couldn't resist cutting some so that I can do a little bit of turning as and when it dries out a bit. I went up about 1.45 and got back to my van about 4.30 after cutting a lot of the conifers so that they could be put on top of the fire and not be so spread out.Richard was the last of 24 vans to arrive I didn't think they were going to stop coming,it's nice to see so many people out at this time of year.
Saturday morning the ladies went off shopping as usual but only Robin & Charley went golfing,I thought I would be busy cutting wood so I didn't take my clubs, but I had done it of Friday so I went into Pontifract with Richard hopeing to go to Haribo's, but they were shut so we didn't get any sweets. At 6.30 Pm I went to light the fire, I put some old oil high up on the bonfire hoping it would run down to help get the fire going, well it did ,it beat me down as I reached in to light the paper I had put lower down, the oil got there quicker and my hand got covered in oil, and the wind was blowing so hard it kept blowing my mathes out and I had to borrow Robin's lighter to get it going. The wind eventually helped once it was lit. Then it was time for the fireworks , and a very good show it was too, well worth the money. Then it was time for supper in the barn,(a bit of a squeeze but we managed) Caldervale soup & roll, followed by Pie & peas, followed by Toffee, parkin and a variety of other sweets. Then if was tea & coffee.A very good supper indeed.Well done to the servers. A quiz from Duncan brought the evening to an end, Thanks Duncan and gang for a good night.
Sunday morning we had coffee morning in the barn (the rain had started again during the night and was still at it) and paid our fees, and after putting all the tables and chairs and settees back in the barn went back to our vans ready for a bite to eat. Then it was time to pack up and head for home ,one or two needed a helping hand to get off the field but they all managed it in
the end with Enid & Jack Guest being the last off with us. Thanks to all
our visitors for joining in and we hope to see you again soon. See you all
at the dinner next weekend
Bye for now Joan & Barrie
